Sand.

Sand gets just everywhere – even into supposedly hermetically sealed electronics. Sand is also the intrinsic enemy of all functioning connections, both mechanical and conductive in nature.

And if there’s one thing a desert planet like Tatooine has plenty of, it’s sand.

Ooo ooo ooO

Sandtrooper TK-1032 should have realized a lot sooner that the usual background noise of Mos Eisley was no longer reaching his ears except in a warped and muted version; but since the Devastator herself had jumped into the system a few hours earlier, and in all the turmoil resulting from the arrival, he’d had other things to worry about.

It didn’t become a problem either, until TK-1023 was about to routinely check a landspeeder, and couldn’t understand a word of what the old man in it was saying.

“What?” the sandtrooper replied, perhaps not the most polite of all possible answers, but it did the job. And anyways, politeness was just a waste of time in the streets of Mos Eisley.

The old man repeated his words in a raised voice, but TK-1032 still couldn’t understand a word.

“What?!?”

They went back and forth that way a few times, without a change to the situation. The old man was gesticulating with increasing agitation, and the sandtrooper was seized by the unexpected but unshakable, steadily intensifying feeling that he really ought to listen to the old man.

In the end, TK-1032 tore the helmet off his head in frustration, to finally get a chance at a sensible conversation. Without the distortion in color by the tinted lenses (plus the ubiquitous dust), however, it was painfully obvious that the droid on the backseat wasn’t sporting the usual tarnished scrap-metal look, but a golden sheen that had no place, at all, on a planetary sandblaster like Tatooine.

On the newest Imperial search order, on the other hand, such a thing was right on top of the list.

“But those are the droids we are looking for!” TK-1032 called out, and from that point onwards, the further history of the galaxy went a bit differently than expected.

And just because a few grains of sand.
At a recent event, we had a slight problem at one point to keep a conversation going with a helmeted trooper, since it contained little more than the syllable "What?!?" on his side. Bookie and I immediately imagined how things might have gone, if the same problem would have occurred in front of a certain gesticulating Jedi on Tatooine . ...:D (Big Grin)
